About This Item
London: Virtue & Co. Limited. First. Very Good. Mrs. Hugh Blackburn. The "Mastiffs" was a yacht owned by John Burns (Lord Inverclyde), who took a small group on a trip to the Faroes and Iceland in 1878 The group included the famous author Anthony Trollope, with the condition that he would write a narrative of the voyage Another passenger, Mrs Blackburn, was enlisted to do drawings of the party experience Trollope wrote this story of the voyage, and it was published privately later in the same year It was distributed as a memento of the trip for just the passengers and a small number of friends It was never made available for saie It is therefore one of the scarcest Trollope titles
This copy is in the original blue cloth and gilt binding There is slight bumping and scuffing on the corners and spine ends and minor wrinkling of the cloth at the lower edge Binding is still tight and sound Original endpapers are beginning to show some cracking, not affecting the binding Text and plates have moderate foxing, primarily on plates No other marks or damage
Frontispiece map, 14 drawing pages and 2 photo pages are all present The new binding is tight and sound The text is unusually clean and bright, with no marks Very slight foxing on a few of the plates and slight age darkening at the page edges This copy has the cleanest text of the several copies I have seen [Sadleir 51] 46 + 17 plates pp.
