[5.75x8.75"]; xii, 224 pp., frontispiece image of Hugh Robert Mill Medal of the Royal Meteorological Society, five images; Light green cloth covers with gilt lettering on spine; Pastel green dust jacket with red lettering on spine and front and narrative of Mill on rear; Minor shelf wear and bumping to corners; Surface and edge shelf wear and some soiling to dust jacket, darkening of spine, chips to corners, top and bottom of spine with no loss of text. [Rosove 228.B.1a]. Hugh Robert Mill (1861-1950) was a Scottish geographer and meteorologist. Throughout his career he was influential in British exploration and scientific achievement. He was the librarian of the Royal Geographical Society and secretary of the Royal Meteorological Society. He was closely involved with the British Antarctic expeditions during the "Heroic" period (1895 to 1922) of Bruce, Scott and Shackleton. He wrote the first biography of Shackleton after his death in 1922. From the dust jacket, this book was initially titled "... My Seven Lives, in order to indicate his many distinct interests, in at least four of which he achieved worldwide fame." He was trained as a chemist and worked in establishing the academic field of geography. He was also interested in meteorology and supported the Antarctic expeditions with "... encyclopedic knowledge of Polar exploration ...".
