About This Item

Vico Equebse, Giuseppe Cacchi, 1586. *** First edition, first issue. The finest illustrated work by the famous mathematician and occultist. Illustrated by one frontispiece with portrait of the author, one portrait of Cardinal Luigi d'Este to whom the work is dedicated and 85 engravings in the text, 4 of which are full page. These are chiefly the comparative heads of man and animal, repeated as della Porta discusses different features. He also devotes several chapters to the interpretation of dreams, the virtues of plants used to make potions, and so on. It is said that the censors were slow to licence the manuscript for printing. "Della Porta preceded Lavater in attempting to estimate human character by the features. This is one of the first works on the ancient 'science' of physiognomy to be extensively illustrated." (Garrison & Morton 150) First issue : On leaves R3-R4, two engravings of a hog and a bull with their human counterpart are transposed so that the texts read incorrectly. Probably the first book to be printed in Vico Equebse, a small town near Naples. A very discreet restoration in the outer margin of the leaves. Very fine copy. Mortimer Harvard 398. Bel exemplaire. *** In-folio de (2), 265 pp. Vélin. (Reliure de l'époque.) - -.
