About This Item

London, Chatto & Windus, 1928. . First edition, first impression, presentation copy inscribed by the author; 8vo; publisher's orange cloth, titles to spine gilt, spine faded and a little cocked, boards slightly bowed. Overall a very good copy.
A fine association copy of Harold Acton's first novel, with his signed presentation inscription to the front free endpaper, 'To dear Georgia [Sitwell] hoping to while away a fast and fleeting hour or so of her valuable time with love from Harold October 1928'.

Georgia Sitwell (nee Doble, 1905-1980) was the daughter of a wealthy Canadian banker. She married Sacheverell, the younger of the Sitwell siblings, in Paris in October 1925. Harold Acton had been friends of the Sitwells from youth and was a central figure in the Bright Young Things of the 1920s, so brilliantly portrayed by Evelyn Waugh, who based his character Anthony Blanche partly on Acton and on Brian Howard.
