About This Item

263-271 pages with bibliography. Royal octavo (9 1/4" x 6") bound in original publisher's wrappers. Ethnology Volume VI, Number 3 complete issue. First edition. The most important process in tribal council humor is communication. Hammond's statement that "joking provides a permissive and flexible context in which a grievance can be expressed" is a true but limited and inadequate proposition. Jokes can communicate many kinds of things. They can indicate the relationship of a visiting official with the council. They can suggest many different shades of opinion about suggestions and proposals. Through humor, men can sometimes communicate what would be difficult to say in any other way. Through humor, human contact, always problematic, becomes less fragile. Condition: Edge wear, conres bumped else very good.
