Folio. 191pp., illustrated with magnificent illustrations by Dore whose marvelous depictions of the squalid metropolis and showing an underside described in part by Dickens and written both by Octavia Hill and General Booth were here made bold by the large size engravings with details that later reprints unfortunately had to reduce ending the boldness of his pen, rebacked and re-cornered in brown leather over original maroon cloth, raised bands with lettering gilt, marbled endpapers and all edges marbled, occasional scattered foxing but mostly clean. E.W. Kemble was a 19th-century American illustrator who is best known for his sketches of black culture and African American men and women. 'The Blackberries and their Adventures' is a collection of illustrations depicting black children (i.e. 'blackberries') playing games and dancing. The book, intended for children, was written with significant racist views that would not be considered tolerable today; yet, this book does represent a culture reminiscent of a bygone American era.

Nattali and Bond. London. No Date.,Circa 1850. THREE VOLUMES. Tall 8vo (10.2 x 6.6 inches). Text and plates taken from the Ninth edition. Complete set of this famous trilogy, with 80 fine hand-coloured, full page, aquatint plates, the colouring still strong and bright, by Thomas Rowlandson. Some minor spots of foxing to a few leaves in each volume but generally clean and bright copies in the scarce original publisher's brown cloth bindings, with gilt lettering and decoration on spines. Decorative blind stamped panels on boards. Original yellow coated endpapers. Previous owners bookplates to front paste downe endpapers. Some rubbing to top and tail of spines and fore-edges, and a couple of the hinges with neatly repaired splits (about 1.5 inches) but generally these are very good examples. Slight uniform fading to spines but overall a very attractive set of this classic work with Rowlandson's humourous plates. Uncommon in the publishers original decorative cloth bindings.:

Decorative colour printed front board, lettered and showing the illustration for The Bus Driver, plus twelve full page colour lithographs after the original woodblocks. Brown paper covered boards, printed in colour litho. Plain tan cloth spine. Neat and attractive previous owners bookplate (the celebrated art collectors Robert and Evelyn Benson) on the front paste-down endpaper. Some minor foxing to endpapers and the edges of the boards a little rubed and bumped but overall a very good, bright copy of this beautiful book. :

Woodblock reprint of two famous Japanese picture scrolls which recorded the unsuccessful Mongol invasions of Japan in the 13th century.The scrolls were originally drawn between 1275 and 1293 for the samurai Suenaga Takezaki to record his battlefield valor and deeds during Kublai Khan's attempted invasions of Japan. The scrolls depict the Battle of Bun'ei in 1274 and the Battle of Koan in 1281.

This volume from the 1788 edition covers the clothing, cultures, and religion of the inhabitants of Tartary, Crimea, Greek Island of Corfu, Malta, and Bulgaria. The illustrations depict both men in women in formal dress including the upper bourgeoisie.

Jean de la Fontaine was without question, the most widely read 17th-century fabulist, and perhaps could be rivaled only by Aesop himself. He wrote for what he intended to be a sophisticated French audience; however, his stories provided important lessons on morality for children and adults alike. Many of Fontaine's fables were adapted from those of Aesop and Phaedrus; though he did take liberties to make them his own.

Fontaine's 'Tales' (or 'contes') have not maintained the same popularity as his fables; however, they are no less desirable today. They differ from the fables in that they often contain more sexually explicit content and are not marketed toward a younger audience.
