[9.25x6.25in]; [9], 462 pp., frontispiece of Nansen, 65 illustrations by Nansen in text, 3 plates and 6 maps; Dark blue cloth on covers with gilt lettering on front and spine with white illustration of polar bear on front; Minimal shelf wear to edges, book plate of William Pettigrew Darsie. [ Arctic Biblio 11991]. Fridtjof Nansen (1861-1930) was a Norwegian explorer of Greenland and the Arctic Islands. From the Arctic Bibliography, "Retrospective account of the author's first trip to the Arctic in the sealer Viking 1882, to study animal life and the physical features of the Arctic Sea ... in the Denmark Strait." Nansen was the "Dean" of polar travel and many of the polar explorers, such as Amundsen, Scott, Shackleton and others came to him for counsel and support.

William Pettigrew Darsie (1891-1954) played rugby for Stanford University and United States team in the 1913 New Zealand Rugby Union Tour of North America. He became a farmer in Walnut Creek and a collector of rare books.
