About This Item
London: J. Harris, 1795. Engravings. Landscapes by J. Peltro, Figures by J. Neagle. Each sheet backed to restore margins and some small image and textual losses to two plates which have been expertly facsimiled. A wonderful sequence illustrating a late 18th century British fox hunt, in rich, clear engravings by Peltro and Neagle.
This is a superb example of the four plate Fox Hunting sequence in which a quiet beginning rises to rich crescendo of extreme muscular exertion of animal and man, thundering hooves and barking dogs, ending in victory. Sartorius' rendition of these events is magnificent. John Nost Sartorius was the only son of Francis Sartorius. He 'lived for much of his life at Carshalton in Surrey from where he exhibited no less than seventy-four paintings at the Academy; thirty-two elsewhere. Among his patrons were the Prince of Wales, Lord Derby and Christopher Wilson' (Charles Lane British Racing Prints p.157).
Not in Paul Mellon Collection.
