About This Item

San Francisco: The California Publishing Co, 1893. Hardcover. Good. 407 p. 29 cm. Frontispiece portrait and 45 other b&w plates as well as numerous in-text line drawings. Green cloth with gold print. Bevelled edges, blank impressing. Corners bumped, spine ends softened, slight edge wear, and spine lean. Tape-repaired front endpapers and frontispiece, former owner's label and ink signature.

William Downie joined the California Gold Rush of 1849 and, having acquired the gold fever, spent the next 50 years hunting for it in various parts of the wild west. Hunting For Gold is Downie's personal memoir of his treasure-seeking adventures as far north as Alaska and as far south as Panama. Written in the 1890s, when he was in his eighties, his account is of interest for anyone inspired by the Gold Rush and the areas in and around Downieville, California, named after William himself.
