Although never recognized as Indians by the Federal Government, the Houmas, called "les Oummas" by the French, have maintained a Tribal continuity and lineage since historical times. With more than 11,000 people on the Tribal Roll, the Houmas make up the largest Indian Tribe in Louisiana. Largely Catholic in religious affiliation and French-speaking, the Houmas are a family oriented people. Today some of the Houmas work in industry, in business, in education and other professional fields; however, many, as their ancestors before them, remain in livelihoods directly tied to the sea and / or the marsh (as fishermen, shrimpers, oystermen, builders of boats, netweavers, hunters and trappers)......."
