About This Item

Garden City, New York:: Doubleday & Company, 1974.. 1st Edition, so stated.. Hardbound . BINDING/CONDITION: tan cloth with gilt spine text; Anchor logo blind stamped on the front cover; a Very Good book with a Good dust jacket; publisher's price is clipped, with a publisher-issued price sticker affixed next to the clip.. 8vo (9.5 inches tall) . Indexes. Description: Dust jacket art by Leonard Rosoman; jacket design by Fred Troller. Includes a section of black and white plates. A note about the dust jackets for this series -- beginning with the publication of Genesis in 1964, the books were published as they were completed. Up until 1972, the jackets were all the same -- a simple graphic design by George Giusti showing the Anchor symbol on a cream colored background. After that time though, the covers were greatly transformed -- they came alive with outstanding works from various artists. This is Volume 42 in the Anchor Bible series of book by book translations of the Bible. The publisher's blurb declares ''The Anchor Bible marks the beginning of a new era of cooperation among scholars in biblical research; each volume is the work of an outstanding Protestant, Catholic or Jewish authority on the Bible, and the entire project is under the general editorship of William Foxwell Albright, Professor Emeritus of Semitic Languages at Johns Hopkins University, and David Noel Freedman, Professor of Hebrew and Old Testament Literature at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. The aim is to make the Old and New Testaments accessible to the modern reader; its methods are to arrive at the meaning of the Bible through exact translation and extended exposition, and to reconstruct, as much as possible, the ancient settings of the biblical story.'' Rear gutter code ''P14'' indicates a printing date of April, 1974.
