New York: Reynal & Hitchcock,, 1936. Inscribed by Genthe First trade edition, a limited edition appeared in the same year. Presentation copy from the author, inscribed on the front free endpaper: "For Alice Page Converse, with love and best wishes, from her old Plumber friend, Arnold Genthe, New York 1936". Also tipped-in is a typed letter signed from the publishers to Alice Converse. A marvellous selection of photographs by the German-born photographer, who initially made his name documenting the San Francisco earthquake (1906) and then with Pictures of Old Chinatown (1908). Many writers, politicians, film stars and celebrities are illustrated, including Jack London, Frank Norris, Sinclair Lewis, Teddy Roosevelt, Arturo Toscanini, Mary Pickford, John Barrymore and Isadora Duncan. Scarce in the dust jacket. Quarto. Original reddish-brown cloth, black cloth spine gilt lettered. With dust jacket. 112 illustrations from photographs. A few creases and nicks to price-clipped jacket. A very good copy.
