About This Item
First edition. Number 120 of an undisclosed number of copies. INSCRIBED "For my dear friend of many years Caramai Carroll with all best of wishes from the author, Jennie Prince Black, Dec 15th/38." The music composer and pianist Jennie Prince Black (1868 - 1945) was a life-long resident of Irvington, NY, and the person responsible for the memorial to Washington Irving there. There is a chapter dedicated to the story of "the memorial started in 1919 and finished in 1926," including a recounting of the strange phenomenon that occurred the night of her address at Irvington Town Hall on the 50th anniversary of Irving's death. She also writes about playing on the grounds of the Irving estate and the one time she was invited inside; about growing up in the area; and about the famous people who have visited the area. There are humorous sketches from her life both in Irvington and from her very young days wintering with her family in Manhattan. In a tribute to her in her local paper, The Irvington Gazette, the editor wrote, "This tribute to her memory is but a feeble effort to honor her as she should be honored." As is, we hope, this catalog description of her book. 12mo red cloth, gilt-stamped front board, frontis portrait of the author, illustrated with photographic plates, 112pp. A bit of darkening to gutters otherwise near fine. Scarce to rare.
