Early manuscript copy of Havergal's 1876 hymn, I Take This Pain, Lord Jesus. Signed "Francis Ridley Havergal," but hand-written by an unknown person and not Havergal herself. No date, but circa late 1800s or early 1900s. One page, with the hymn neatly written on both sides. 4.5 x 14 inches long. VG with original fold lines. (Will ship folded, as found.) Havergal (1836-1879) was a popular English religious poet, spiritual author, and hymn writer. Her work is included in many hymnals, and two of her best-known hymns are Take My Life and Let it Be and I Gave My Life for Thee. She never married and died of peritonitis at age 42. Along with the legacy of her hymns, Havergal College for girls in Toronto is named for her.
