About This Item

Venice: Gabriel Giolito de Ferrari et Fratelli, 1555. First Edition. Hardcover (Vellum). Very Good Condition. Full early vellum, gilt to spine, old shelf label inked to spine, scattered foxing, light dampstaining to the upper corner early on and in the gutter at the end, a few pages darkened, tiny wormtrail on upper margin of first few pages, but generally clean and attractive. Attractive woodcut on the title page of the first. The Massa was printed by Valerium Doricum in Rome in 1554. A pair of rare renaissance treatises on dueling, the first pro dueling, the second against, both first editions. Dueling was much in fashion in mid 16th century Italy and there was frequent discussion of both the merits of the practice and its philosophical underpinnings. Only 12 copies in OCLC for the 1st, and 8 for the second. 182, [18] pp; [16], 99pp. Baretti (Italian Library) 47 (for both). Size: Octavo (8vo). Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 1-2 kilos. Inventory No: 044523.
