About This Item

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1883. First edition. Hardcover. Ex-Library. 8vo. [2], v-xi, [2], 2-344, [4] (pages of publisher's advertisements), [4] pp. Rebound in recent silk vertically-ribbed green cloth with portions of the original cloth laid down on the front board and spine. Recent grey and orange marbled endpapers and pastedowns. Bound without the half-title page. Illustrated with a frontispiece wood engraving, a few maps (including one fold-out map done in color at the end of the volume), and with several in-text and full-page wood engravings. Arctic Bibliography 5744. Similar to Gilder's journey searching for the Franklin expedition, this volume records his participation in a search for the remains of De Long's Jeannette and its crew. Gilder records his interactions with the local peoples of the Lena delta region, and provides details on the birds and mammals native to Siberia. Two library stamps (from the Olean Library Association), one of which is on the title page. The map's bottom margin somewhat worn, the reverse with a small tape repair.
