About This Item

[Augsburg: Seutter, c.1737]. A copper engraved map on laid paper. Large uncoloured allegorical and historical cartouche in the lower right, including a coat of arms; decoratively-bordered cartouche in upper right, containing the Explication. Compass rose in lower left. The map is hand-coloured. Imprint within the lower cartouche: aeri incisi et excusa a Matth. Seuttero, S.C. et R. Cath. M. Geogr. Aug. V. Plate size is 58cm x 51cm, on a sheet measuring 65cm x 55cm. Verso is blank. Small paper tape repairs to verso, one small yellow tape mark on verso, some wear to upper margin and upper fold; a clean and attractive copy overall, nicely coloured. The Russians laid siege to the Ottoman fortress in 1737, Ochakov (Otzakoff) was captured by Marshal Münnich, but the next year it was restored to Turkey. The 1737 siege is famous as the basis of one of the tales of Baron Munchausen by Raspe. Ochakov is in the southern Ukraine. A handsome map, and uncommon.
