About This Item

東京. [Tokyo].: 隠學堂. [Ingakudō].. Ansei 1 [1854].. 2 double-page colour woodblock maps, 8 double-page colour woodblock illustrations, 1 colour full page woodblock illustration, 17.5 x 12cm, [40] double folded leaves, presented in a modern protective case. Some light browning, light damp stain lower corner four leaves, some inoffensive and occasional worm holes neatly repaired. Covers rubbed and worn causing a crazed pattern, title label torn with loss. The arrival of Commodore Perry in Japan in 1853 was indeed a pivotal event in the country's history. It generated significant public interest and curiosity as the Japanese people were exposed to American visitors for the first time.

This beautifully illustrated little book offers a portrayal of the events surrounding Perry's arrival in Japan and its aftermath. The book commences with a double-page map of Tokyo Bay, illustrating the defensive positions and the names of Japanese lords responsible for them. The exchange of gifts is a significant diplomatic aspect and lists of the gifts exchanged between the two nations are included. The inclusion of colourful illustrations of the American gifts, including a model steam engine, provides readers with a vivid representation. A double-page map of the United States follows. The book features Japanese-style portraits of Commodore Perry, his staff officers, and sailors. The detailed illustrations of their uniforms and their steamship contribute to the visual narrative. The Japanese translation of a personal letter from the American President, Millard Fillmore, to the "King" of Japan is printed towards the end. .
