About This Item
[Likely France, 1480-1500].. A single leaf from a French Book of Hours, produced ca.1480-1500. Executed on paper (we believe). Some wrinkling at the edges, fine condition . Leaf size is about 9 x 12 cm., in a frame measuring 22 x 26 cm. Attractively matted and framed in a reversible frame, so that both sides of the leaf are visible. Fifteen lines of Latin text in black, in one column, ruled in brown ink. Illuminated vertical panels on both sides with backgrounds of blue, gold and brown, floral designs on the gold backgrounds. The illuminated panel is to the right of the text on the recto, to the left of the text on the verso of the leaf. The text includes: qui etiam illuminat omnem hominem venientem in hunc mundum: fac ut ipse illuminet mentem meam lumine gratiae suae, part of a prayer to the Virgin Mary, from the suffrages section of the manuscript. .
