London: George C. Leighton, 1862. Rebound in full black leather, pale yellow endpapers; illustrated section of original cover affixed to upper board. Includes title page for Vol XLI, followed by two page Index to Engravings, and has all numbered pages (1-708). Lacks two of the four colour illustrations (two pages each) cited in the index, though only the top half of Princess Alice (July 12) is bound in and only the top half of the Opening of the International Exhibition (August 30) is bound in. There are two very long foldouts present: Section View of the Eastern Transept of the International Exhibition following page 356(complete); and Section View of the Nave of the International Exhibition following page 372 (missing part of the right hand side). Any tears in the leaves have been competently reinforced wih clear tape, one page has pencil scribbles, otherwise pages are clean with only the occasional bit of foxing. Issued weekly, the Illustrated London News has news of the day (local, foreign, and colonial), sports, books, obituaries of prominent people, chess instructions, etc. Most famous for its wood engravings which adorn each issue, some being full page and even two adjoining pages. There are 16 illustrations of the Civil War in America, 21 related to the Cotton Famine, 14 of ships and many of the Great International Exhibition held in London. Heavy, weighing 8 lbs. (4 kg) by itself; postage at cost.. First Edition. Full Leather Over Boards. Very Good..
