About This Item

Small folio (13"x 9"), illustration, in color, No 149, Description page included. Normal aging and browning; otherwise very good. Vanity Fair was founded by Thomas Gibson Bowles (AKA Jehu Junior) in 1868. The first issue appeared in 1869, and this magazine would continue through 1913. Bowles wrote much of the humorous and racy commentary in the early years. Despite presenting humorous caricatures of people, along with gossip about them, most people seemed to be flattered to be selected to be in Vanity Fair. This illustration of John Bright (1811-1889) a liberal British politician and President of the Board of Trade. Bright was considered one of the best orators of his generation, and a strong advocate of free trade.
