Gold illustration on front cover shows an Indian on a horse, illustration on spine is of a medicine man. Deckled page edges. Modern endpapers in both volumes. Frontispiece. Authoritative work on North American Indians by American painter, traveler and author, George Catlin (1796-1872). Following a brief career as a lawyer, he produced two major collections of paintings of American Indians and published a series of books chronicling his travels among the native peoples of the North, Central and South America. This publication is profusely illustrated with 360 reproductions of engravings from the original paintings from the author. With one fold-out map. Heavy age wear, staining and scuffing on bindings. Head and tail of spine bumped, corners worn. Tail of spine on Vol. I slightly chipped. Parts of edges frayed. Sporadic foxing throughout. Bindings in fair, interior in overall very good condition.
