More than 250 black-and-white illustrations are sprinkled throughout all sections of the book.

Content includes comprehensive chapters on the history and development of illustrated books for children, in Europe and America. Part One: History and Development and discusses contemporary techniques in graphic reproduction; Part Two: Alphabetic list containing over 250 biographies of illustrators living at the time of publication.; Part Three: Bibliographies, one of illustrators, the other of authors, and their works; Part Four: Appendix. First edition 1947. Second printing 1961.
