About This Item

New York: Harry N. Abrams / Museaum of Modern Folk Art., 1993. 160pp, bibliography, 128 ills (122 color). Or red cloth in jacket. Near new copy. Thornton Dial has been "making things... just for myself" for much of his life. In 1987 fellow Alabama artist Lonnie Holley heard about Dial's fantastic objects and went to visit him. Since then Dial's work has continued to attract notice within the art world. This is the first major monograph on Dial's work. Using a variety of materials- scrap metal, carpeting, rope, canvas wood, and paint- held together with industrial sealing compound, Dial creates powerful narrative assemblages. His primary symbol is the tiger with which he represents the African American male. Along the way Dial comments on a wide range of social issues. This collection comprises 128 works (122 in full color) with commentary.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Fine. Illus. by Thornton Dial.. 4to.
