About This Item
A photographic album with more than 230 images recording the travels of Agnes Elizabeth Adams between 1913 and 1915, including snapshots of her time at Mount Saint Joseph's College in Cincinnati, Ohio, as well as travels to Cuba and California, where she visited the expositions in San Diego and San Francisco.
According to Ancestry records, Adams was born in Clear Lake, Iowa in 1896. She was an only child and lost both of her parents by 1911 when she was just 15 years old. She became a schoolteacher and in 1919, married Rex Dimmick (1892 -1974), a veteran of World War I. Together, they had three children and lived in Lawrenceville, Pennsylvania, where he was a school principal. Their first child, Elizabeth M. Dimmick, was born in 1921, and her name appears on the first page of this album.
The photographs in this album show Agnes' travels with a variety of friends before she was married. There are a dozen photographs onboard the "Steamer Alice" dated July 4-5, 1914, followed by images of Cuba, including several taken at Morro Castle. A series of photographs show her visit to California. There are 13 photographs from San Diego's Panama-Pacific International Exposition, which celebrated the completion of the Panama Canal. There is just one image of the main archway for San Francisco's competing exposition. Other locations seen in these images include Pebble Beach Lodge in Monterey, the San Gabriel Mission, Busch Gardens in Pasadena, Catalina Island, Mt. Rubidoux, the Mission Inn in Riverside, La Jolla Beach, and San Diego Bay.
The black and white photographs are pasted to the black album leaves, a few which are annotated with brief captions in white. The images vary in size, but most are 5 1/2" x 3"; a few are annotated on the verso. The first six leaves have separated from the album and are laid in. The album is bound in brown suede and leather, with a decorative design and a brown silk string tie.
