About This Item
Holiday House, New York, 1987. Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 1st Edition. SIGNED FIRST EDITION FIRST PRINTING is NEW as is Mylar protected jacket. Book is signed with great flourish on the title page by Deborah Kogan Ray, the illustrator. Becky and her family move to the Lower East Side of New York ( as did mine) from Russia in 1910. Life is very different in the New World. Becky's large family has to squeeze into a three room apartment, and the streets are noisy and crowded. Learning English at a big school, cooling off under the hydrant, dancing to the hurdy gurdy , sleeping on the roof in the summer heat, going to the nickelodeon these are exciting new experiences. At the same time Becky observes the traditions of the Old World, polishing brass and getting ready for Passover. This is a sensitive, authentic portrayal of a period in America when immigration was at its height. The wonderfully illustrated book is a fine collectible for any library and for any age.
