About This Item

AN AMAZING EARLY 19TH CENTURY PROVINCIAL ANGLING BROADSIDE ADVERTISEMENT

[ANGLING]. HOOPER, William Tackle-Maker. Important Intelligence to all Lovers of Angling, in the British Empire, and Challenge to the World. Hooper, Loughboro', most respectfully presumes to communicate tot eh Royal Family, The Nobility and Gentry, That he has brought o equisite [sic] Perfection, his celebrated unequalled, or Imperial, Transparent, Inimitable, Incomprehensible and Infallible Fishing Lines, Manufactured on a new principle...The Best Fishing Tackle in the World, and warranted to take fish throughout the year...Parties on a Fishing Excursion to the fine Streams of Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, The Lakes or other prolific Waters, are recommended to send, or Call at Hooper's for the best Angle Rods, Ladies' and Gentlemens' extra neat walking Stick Rods, Gold Heads, &c. Lines to take very kind of River Fish, From the diminutive Prickle Back, to the Noble Salmon... [with 25 additional lines of text]. Folio broadside, 12 x 7", approx. 475 words within a Greek key border, with a large Royal coat-of-arms at the head and printed in a variety of types; the border cut into on 3 sides, various newspaper clippings, some dated 1818 and 1819, pasted to blank verso. [Loughborough, Leicestershire, England:] [Alpheus] Buck, Typ. [ca. 1815].

Apparently unrecorded. A splendid advertising angling broadside of approximately 475 words in elegant type and florid language, appealing to the ladies as well as men, saying: "He has made the neatest preparation that Ladies may participate in this fascinating Amusement conducive to Health, presenting a grand field to Genius, worthy the ROYAL STUDY, and for which every Lady who drives her Curicle is already qualified." William Hooper's will was proved in March 1824, where he was described as a draper and "Fishing Tackle Manufacturer." At the end Hooper notes that "every Line bears his Name on a Coloured Label," and that his wares are available from "Mr. Preston, Hair Dresser, Leicester, Mr. Thornly, Perfumer, Shardlow, Derbyshire, &c." Other than borders being trimmed close, a fine copy. ABAA-VBF
