Boston: Dana Estes & Company, 1898. Hardcover. Good with no dust jacket. Sound binding; hinge papers starting. Clean, tanned pages, which are rough cut. Cloth over boards is edge rubbed with overall light shelf wear and darkened spine. Paper label at top of spine on each volume is rubbed, tanned, scuffed but lettering is visible. ; It was Eliot's last published novel (1879) and her most experimental, taking the form of a series of literary essays by an imaginary minor scholar whose eccentric character is revealed through his work. Several actual literary essays follow. 8.5" (18.5 cm) tall; 342 pages.
