About This Item

8vo, pp. [ii], 92; some marginal foxing and dustsoiling, but largely clean, with a couple of manuscript corrections to text; in contemporary drab wrappers, spine reinforced with paper but worn and frayed; binding loose, with some gatherings only held by one cord.

Uncommon catalogue of the Anatomical Museum in Pavia, built as a complement to the anatomical theatre which was established by the anatomist Antonio Scarpa (1752-1832), who had been appointed professor of anatomy at the university in 1783 with the intention of transforming Pavia into one of the leading medical schools in Europe.

The main part of the catalogue contains 356 exhibits, divided into five sections: osteology, splanchnology, neurology, sense organs, and angiology; an appendix contains 61 items prepared for examination with a microscope. Several entries feature references to works by John Hunter, Vicq d'Azir, and Scarpa himself. The catalogue is followed by the speech given by Scarpa at the dedication of the anatomical theatre on October 31st, 1785, and a catalogue of Scarpa's works published up to 1804. Not mentioned in the catalogue, but later added to the collection, is Scarpa's own preserved head.

Outside Continental Europe, OCLC records copies at Kansas State, Minnesota, NLM, and the Wellcome.
