First edition, hardback bound in the original orange cloth with printed blue titling and design. 19.5 × 13.5cm, 306pp. The first of Thompson's Indian novels and is the story of Vincent Hamar, a judge in the Civil Service who is deeply fond of India and sympathetic to Indians. He is sent to a small place called Vishnugram as a punishment after refusing to jail some Swarajists where he meets two missionaries, Alden and Findley, who share his love of Indian thought and philosophy. Condition: This copy is in good condition. There is some rubbing to the boards but the contents are in good order with secure binding and clean pages.
