Bound in 3 quarter dark purple morocco. Top edge gilt. Binder's ticket on verso of front free end paper (upper left corner). Pages are clean. Small tear or paper defect in margin of p. 121. A near fine copy. Claude Farrere (1876-1957) French novelist. Many of his works were set in exotic locations. His Fumee d' Opium (first published in 1904) is an interwoven collection of stories which focus on the opium dens and brothels of Vietnam or Cochin China during the 1930's. The book appeared in English under the title Black Opium. This edition contains illustrations by Jean Bouchaud.

(2)p. manuscript letter measuring approx. 8" x 10 ½", folded, signed and dated January 14, 1867, Coast Survey Office, to Charles Lanman in regards to information pertaining to Prof. A.D. Bache. Mr. Hilgard was born in Germany. He settled with his parents in Illinois. Studied engineering in Philadelphia. He entered the Coast Survey in 1845. He was in charge of the Coast Survey under the Superintendent from 1862 until 1875. Throughout the American Civil War he served the Union Army and Navy by the construction of maps and charts and by surveys as well as by tidal and other information. During the failing health of Professor Bache, Hilgard, who was at that time in charge of the Coast Survey office, was obliged to perform the duties of Superintendent, which he did without extra compensation. Plate of Montgomery Castle facing page 81 has a tear 2/3 of the way into it, there are old glue marks to the rear. Otherwise just a few marks and occasional stains. Bound in old paper covered boards, with the remains of a paper spine, the binding is starting to come loose in places. Page edges are utrimmed and consequently a bit dusty. ESTC T147632 which is described as being a large paper copy..

The two plates of coins are numbered page 29* and 32*, but ar enot included in the pagination on ESTC, so I have included them in the plates. In 19th century half leather which is worn, head of spine is torn. Rough pencil outline plan of the town attached to the rear of the frontisipiece. Occasional pencil notes and occasional spotting..

In old marbled paper boards with narrow leather spine and leather corner tips - leather very worn and joints split, lettering label damaged and spine chipped..

This is a scarce, antique copy of "Taintor's Route and City Guides" - this particular guide is for the "Pennsylvania Coal Regions via Morris & Essex R.R." Published in 1867 by Taintor Brothers in New York. The guide features 4 color maps; the "Map of the Anthracite Coal Regions of Pennsylvania with Connecting Railways" is larger and folds out. "With sketches of the cities, villages, stations, scenery, and objects of interest along the route." There are illustrated advertisements at both the front and back. Please see the photos for the complete list of contents.Condition:The pages are in great condition - mostly clean and white with no writing and only some very sparse light foxing; tiny tear at the outer edge of page 29. The fold-out map is clean and firmly attached. The covers are present, but have detached from the spine and are separated along the right edge of the spine; creases at the left-hand corners of the front cover; there are a few tiny stain spots on the back cover.
