London: Saunders and Otley, 1833. Two volumes uniformly bound. Likely rebacked some time ago. Volume 1 carries the book-plate of Richard Robert Madden, the author of these books, on front pastedown. Small stamp of Dr. More Madden, Dublin, on title-page of Volume 1. Ink name of Thomas More Madden, M.D., Dublin, 1860 at top of title-page of Volume 2. He was the son of the author. Of further interest, funeral cards of Richard R. Madden, M.D. and Mrs. Harriet Madden (his wife) are found on the reverse of the title-page of Volume 1. Chapters on advantages and abuses of literary pursuits, longevity of composers and sculptors, longevity of authors; sections on Lord Byron, Cowper, Walter Scott, Burns, Johnson, Pope. Quite a clean copy internally. Newspaper clipping grued onto rear endpaper of both volumes, one on longevity of public men and the other regarding "grand old men". Rather fascinating material and with a fine provenance--most certainly the author's own copy of his work. Madden (1798-1886) was an Irish physician, historian, and abolitionist. He played an active role in drafting anti-slavery rules in Jamaica on hehalf of the British government. 298,299pp.. First Edition. 1/4 Green Calf Over Boards. Moderate Cover Wear/No Dust Jacket.
