Octavo, original green pebble-grained cloth decorated in blind on front & rear covers, titles and decorations in gilt on spines. [339] + 288 + 364 pp. Engraved ornamental titlepages (that of Vol. three printed in red & black), 18 plates by John Leech, George Cruikshank, and Robert Buss. Portrait frontispiece in Volume 3. Wear to spine ends, that of Volume three somewhat pronounced; spine tanned, some inner hinges cracking. A very good, sound set, quite attractive.

¶ Material originally published in BENTLEY'S MISCELLANY, collected in book form. Classic collection of legends, ghost stories, tales of witchcraft and poetry (including "Singular Passage in the Life of the Late Henry Harris, D. D.", a tale of terror), supposedly recorded by Thomas Ingoldsby of Tappington Manor, actually a pseudonym of Richard Harris Barham.

Synopsis

The Ingoldsby Legends are a collection of myths, legends, ghost stories and poetry supposedly written by Thomas Ingoldsby of Tappington Manor, actually a pen-name of Richard Harris Barham. The legends were first printed in 1837 as a regular series in Bentley's Miscellany and later in New Monthly Magazine. The legends were illustrated by John Leech and George Cruikshank. They proved immensely popular and were compiled into books published in 1840, 1842 and 1847 by Richard Bentley.
