About This Item

Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1998. First Edition. Near Fine/Near Fine. [9.25x6.25in]; xviii, [10], 428 pp., five maps, satellite image, many images in text, glossary, bibliography and index; Dark gray cloth covers with white ink lettering on spine; Dark pictorial dust jacket with mint-green band and black and white lettering on front and spine, review comments on back; Negligible shelf wear to book or dust jacket. John C. Behrendt (1932- ) was a Antarctic research Geophysicist for the U. S. Geological Survey from 1964 to 1995. This book is the author's memoir of his experiences on the Antarctic Ellsworth Station from November 1956 to early 1958. This U. S. Navy supported science expedition was part of many Antarctic expeditions during the International Geophysical Year (1957-1958). The efforts of the international expeditions created the "scientific age" in Antarctica that continues to this day.

Behrendt and others wintered over on the Filchner Ice Shelf and was part of a 1300 mile journey to measure the thickness of the ice, along with geological observations of the Dufek Massif.
