Leur langue s'appelait langue mexicaine, ou encore langue nahuatl, c'est-à-dire langue claire, intelligible. La conquête espagnole entraîna la mort de la plus grande partie des Mexicains et, pour les survivants, l'altération irréversible de leur culture. Cette catastrophe historique - l'une des plus grandes de l'histoire de l'humanité - a pu être partiellement atténuée aux regards de la postérité par l'abondante littérature écrite ou recueillie par quelques notables indigènes et quelques religieux éclairés. Ce premier volume est une grammaire pratique de la langue nahuatl. Il peut servir de référence à l'anthologie du V2 (à paraître en 1980). D'autre part, il comprend un aperçu du nahuatl moderne qui, sous diverses formes dialectales, reste parlé de nos jours par environ un million de personnes.
