About This Item

Madrid: Ex typographia Francisci Martinez, 1629. Large Quarto, 11 1/2 x 8 inches. Beautifully rebound edition, brown leather over boards, five raised bands, black leather title plate, gilt lettering and decorations at spine, gilt decorations around outter edges of covers, marbled edges, marbled end papers, beautifully engraved end title page, written in Latin. Title page showing Faith and Religion as pillars upholding the Spanish monarchy within an aedicule or classical architectural element. The Spanish king sits holding a sword and scepter with his foot on the globe between America and Spain. Two figures representing allegorical representations of Spain (a soldier in armor holding a sheaf of wheat) and America (with feathered headdress and holding a sheaf of corn or maize) flank him. Two vignettes at the bottom of the pillars show a man battling a many-headed snake with the motto: 'Domat omnia virtus,' and a beehive with the motto: 'Omnia nos itidem.' Also includes the royal Spanish coat of arms and a parrot. The globe is held by Neptune or Poseidon with his trident resting on a shell in the ocean. The figure of Faith holds a cross, chalice and host; the figure of Religion holds a pelican feeding its chicks from its breast. In 1609 Solorzano was appointed judge of the audience of Lima and became the leading Spanish colonial jurist in the seventeenth century, instituting a number of reforms and improvements to the administration and tribunals. Pertaining to Spain, the colonies and the Administrations covering topics related to artifacts, industry, and human activies. Fine externally with the marbled edges slightly faded, Near Fine internally, ex-libris bookplate at top corner of front pastedown, pages mostly clean with very light spotting and foxing.
