Johannes Hartmann:
"Hartmann's importance is in having introduced pharmaceutical and medical chemistry into the university and in having given practical instruction in it. This new field, which had been developed in the works of Paracelsus and his disciples, was then emerging from alchemy. Yet Hartmann did not fall into alchemical speculations; instead, he sought to mediate between the Galenists and the iatrochemists. He left few writings on the practical aspects of the subject, and most of his works appeared posthumously. A glimpse of his activity is given by a laboratory journal for the year 1615. [Š] The many editions of his principal work, Praxis chymiatrica, testify to the respect that contemporaries accorded to this textbook of pharmaceutical chemistry." (DAB)
Johann Hartmann (1568 Amberg - 1631 Marburg) attained a doctorate in Marburg. There he received the title of Professor of Chymiatrie (Chemistry) until 1609. Hartmann is particularly worth mentioning as he was the first professor chemistry, not only in Germany, but also in Europe. Doctors had not yet begun at that time to take up chemistry also to the circulate amongst the schools the academic instruction articles on chemistry and pharmaceutical applications. His book "practice Chymiatrica" (for the first time published 1633) reached several editions. This particular edition is extremely rare and is a compilation of his works and includes the 'Galenic' or pharmaceutical cures studied and developed by him (Hartmann).
