About This Item

Buenos Aires: Editorial Estuario, 1969 Early reprint. Warmly inscribed by García Márquez to his nephew, Gustavo, on the first free leaf: "Para Gustavito, / digno hijo de su / padre, que es hijo / del mío, con el / cariño de su tío, / GABO / [rule] / 1971." ["For Gustavito, deserving son of your father, who is the son of my own, with the affection of your uncle, GABO 1971"]. Publisher's bright yellow paper wrappers, lettered in green and blue and with green illustration of an umbrella to front wrapper. A good copy, variously worn with creasing and light soiling to wrappers, some offsetting to first free leaf, light evidence of water damage to text block edge, text block starting at front hinge but with all text intact and relatively clean. A well-used copy, charming with the author's inscription, from the library of the author's close friend's daughter. First published in the magazine Mito in 1955 as Monologo de Isabel viendo llover en Macondo [Monologue of Isabel Watching it Rain in Macondo], this short monologue is one of the first appearances of the town of Macondo after La hojarasca. It deals with many of García Márquez's major themes, including death, solitude, and magical realism, and is told from the point of view of a young woman as her town is inundated with torrential rain, resulting in corpses from a flooded morgue floating down the street. This particular edition contains an essay on the author and the themes of his work by literary critic Ernesto Volkening.. Inscribed by Author. Soft Cover. Very Good.
