Biography of Ishi (ca. 1860 - 1916), a Native American of Northern California who lived most of his life without contact with Euro-American culture. Ishi literally means "man" in Yahi. This historical account by anthropologist Theodora Kroeber (1897 - 1979), who never met Ishi herself, is based on notes & comments of her anthropologist husband, Alfred L. Kroeber (1876 - 1960). Found in the corral of a slaughter house near Oroville, CA, Ishi, brought to San Francisco by Professor T. T. Waterman, lived there for the remainder of his life under the care & protection of Alfred Kroeber & the staff of the Univ. of California's Museum of Anthropology. This book was first published a year after Alfred Kroeber's death. 255 pgs w/archival photos, 10 chapters in 2 parts: Part I, Ishi the Yahi; and Part II, Mister Ishi, followed by Epilogue: Death in a Museum.
