Wright, a Harvard-educated lawyer and academic, spent much of his life developing the detailed fictional world of Islandia, which became a substantial manuscript upon his death in 1931. The novel was compiled and edited by Wright's wife and friends from his extensive notes and manuscripts. Its publication brought Wright's vision to a wider audience, despite his never having seen it in print. Although not as widely known as some other utopian works, "Islandia" has influenced readers and writers with its thought-provoking depiction of an ideal society and its critique of modern civilization.
