About This Item
Oxford: Clarendon Press,, 1890. First edition. Henry Fanshawe Tozer (1826-1916) was a respected geologist and lecturer at Oxford University. This work is "an account of three separate journeys made in the spring of 1874, 1886, and 1889. This interesting work contans long sections on Lemnos, Thasois and Samothrace" (Blackmer). This copy has an ownership inscription on the front free endpaper of "Mrs J. Nicholas Brown 1929 Cruise of the Iolanda". The Iolanda was a luxury yacht built in 1908 and inherited by Agnes Griswold Landon Pyne (1887-1961) after the death of her husband Moses Taylor Pyne Jr in 1923. The Pyne family potentially knew the Brown family through their joint business ventures in banking and investment, explaining their presence on the yacht. Octavo. Original blue-green cloth, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, covers panelled in blind. With colour folding map, illustrations to text. Minor rubbing to extremities, offsetting of signature to toned half-title, small nick to folding map edge, 65 mm closed tear to fore edge of p. 230 effecting text. A very good copy. Blackmer 1670.
