The first concerns the relationship during the 1930?s between Thomas Hudson, painter, and his three young sons who visit him on vacation and disrupt his lonely and closely controlled life style. This part contains a number of lively exploits and a great description of deep sea fishing, one of Hemmingways? particular interests. The second ?Act? takes place in war-time Cube where Hudson is involved in secret anti-submarine activities. His dialogue with local personalities displays Hemingways adroit and humorous characterisations. The final stage of the novel takes place a short while after aboard Hudson?s improvised Q-boat as he hunts down the survivors of a German submarine and contains some of the author?s finest action scenes..* A VERY GOOD copy of the First UK edition with some ageing and shelf wear.*
