About This Item
Boston: New York Graphic Society, 1988. First edition. Hardcover. A fine copy in slick illustrated boards in a fine jacket. 4to. This copy is inscribed by Issey Miyake: "Mr. Peter Schub / with gratitude / A / UN / (signed by Miyake) and dated 1988.9.1." From the library of Peter Schub who had a long and distinguished career as a revered photo agent. Penn and Miyake, a Japanese fashion designer had a deep creative understanding of each other's work, having met in 1983. Miyake saw his designs in a new way through Penn's photographs. The images communicated the essence of the collection. Through the photographer's lens, the texture, shapes, and forms went beyond cloth and instead transformed into art. To keep an unbiased view, Penn never attended an Issey Miyake fashion show, while Miyake was never present at the photo sittings by Penn. Their collaboration was based on complete creative trust. Edited by Nicholas Calloway, foreword by Isamu Noguchi and an essay by Jay Cocks. Typographic design by Kiyoshi Kanai, and a few words by Isssey Miyake. 46 full page photographs by Penn.
