About This Item

New York: M. Evans and Company. Near Fine in Near Fine dj. (c.1975). First Edition. Hardcover. [small dent in top edge of front cover near spine, small black dot on bottom edge (remainder mark?); jacket is lightly surface-rubbed, tiny bit of wear at bottom right corner of front panel]. (B&W photographs) INSCRIBED at great length to a friend and SIGNED by author Crane on the front endpaper. A compositive portrait of Jack Nicholson "as he sees himself and as his friends see him." The bulk of the book consists of interviews conducted by the authors with a wide range of Nicholson's friends and professional collaborators (15 individuals in all), plus two interviews with the actor himself. The interviewees include Roger Corman, Karen Black, Bruce Dern, Dennis Hopper, Monte Hellman, Hal Ashby and Robert Evans. There's also a brief commentary by the authors, and a "films of" section with casts, credits and synopses for Nicholson's films up to that time (the last title is CHINATOWN). Obviously a lot of water has flowed under Jack's bridge since then, but it's still an interesting and valuable look at one of the great actors of our time, at a moment when he had just reached full-fledged movie stardom. .
