The Seattle-based jazz critic's deeply-researched story that began with interviews for an oral history project in 1988. With contemporary portrait photos by Calderón and select discography assisted by Ken Wiley. Includes musicians Corky Corcoran, Bumps Blackwell, Ray Charles, Patti Bown, Larry Coryell, Buddy Catlett, Floyd Standifer, Quincy Jones, Ernestine Anderson, Traff Hubert, Janet Thurlow, Oscar Holden, Pops Buford, Palmer Johnson, Don Lanphere, Chuck Metcalf, Jabo Ward, Leon Vaughn, and Billy Toles.
