About This Item

London and Glasgow: Blackie and Son Hard Cover. 7 1/2 x 5 1/8. 174 pp. The Adventures of Jacky Brown-Coat was first published in South Africa and appeared there under the title of Field Mouse Stories. Although undated, this book has the look and feel of children's books from the 1930s and early 40s. The story of a family of field mice, Black Beetle, Cock Sparrow, Otter, Fox, Speckled Cock, Green Lizard, and assorted other delightful creatures who wear proper clothes and conduct themselves as well-mannered Englishmen, reciting poetry, discussing politics and conducting business. Each chapter (of which there are 10) is titled and begins with a full page b/w finely detailed illustration. Binding is lt. brown cloth on boards with dk green lettering and decoration. Spine is especially lovely with title, author and 3 vintage desig ns. Cover has a bit of soiling and wear to edges. Endpapers pristine, no former owner's name. Extra heavy, quality pages, clean and bright. No foxing. Entire text super clean. Beginning of cracked spi ne, p. 64. But tight and all pages are secure. This is a very interesting book in the tradition of "Stuart Little" or possibly "Wind in the Willows" A good copy of this scarce children's book. Overall cond: good-v. good.. Hard Cover. Good-/No Jacket.
