Brown polished cloth lettered in gilt. discreet owner's signature on flyleaf, otherwise a mint copy in dust jacket. First edition. Frontispiece portrait of Jacob Lawrence, and numerous reproductions of his paintings in color and black and white. 1 vols. 4to. Inscribed to Bob Blackburn. This copy is inscribed boldy by Lawrence on the title page to his friend and fellow black Harlem artist: "To: - Bob Blackburn - much respect! Jake 1987."

At 13 Blackburn began attending classes at the Harlem Arts Community Center operated by the WPA's Federal Art Project, studying with Charles Alston and Augusta Savage, among others. At the Harlem Art Community Center Blackburn met Ronald Joseph, who was his classmate. Here he met Jake Lawrence.
