An internally sound copy but the outer wrapper has lost most of the backstrip paper as well as a small paper loss to the top inner edge of the front panel. Remanents of the original glassine overwrap remain but serve no useful purpose. 4to, thin paper-covered boards. 18 pp of text plus 71 b/w plates + frontispiece, portrait. French text. A copy apart from the numbered edition of 950, 50 of which contained an original etching. The frontispiece reproduces the marvellous oil portrait of the sculptor and his wife painted in 1916 by their good friend Amedeo Modigliani and now in the Art Institute of Chicago. Maurice Raynal was the author of one of the earliest monographs on Lipchitz, in 1920. Bound in the French style with a paper wrapper over heavier paper stock, the wrapper has lost most of the backstrip paper as well as a small paper loss to the top inner edge of the both the front and back panels. This in addition to general discoloration and an area of light stain. Remanents of the original glassine overwrap remain but serve no useful purpose. Although the book is internally sound it would benefit from rebinding.
