About This Item

Portland: Champoeg Press, 1960 Book. Fine. Hardcover. The definitive edition, limited to 1450 copies printed by Lawton Kennedy. Edited by Charles L. Camp. 352pp. Frontis portrait, 5 plates, 4 maps (2 folding), text illustrations. Red cloth lettered in gilt on spine and front cover. A very fine and bright copy. An expanded edition of Clyman's reminiscences and diaries, first published in book form in 1928. The author was one of the first white men to traverse South Pass and, in 1826, to circumnavigate the Great Salt Lake. His diaries cover the years 1844-47 and describe his adventures on the Oregon and the Oregon-California Trails, including the time spent in San Francisco in 1845. In 1848 he settled permanently in California, where he died at his Napa ranch in 1881. "This is the only overland journal for this year (1844). The emigration consisted of about 1500 plus a small party led by Elisha Stephens. This was the Stephens-Murphy group that took the Ft. Hall cutoff to California. An important and interesting journal written by one of the most fascinating of frontiersmen" (Mintz). [Mintz: 99]..
