About This Item
Autograph letter signed, Hiram, Ohio, October 15, 1871, to Thomas W. Phillips, his most intimate personal friend. “Yours of the 11th instant is received. I am greatly rejoiced to hear that Charles is improving, and that we may now confidently look for his complete recovery. I have greatly desired to visit you, and do not yet abandon the hope of doing so before the next session of Congress begins. But I must go to New Hampshire next week and cannot now see my way clear to get to your house. Still I shall do so if I can.
“I have been closely engaged in the political campaign for the last two months…Much love to Pam and yourself.”
